Vrinda Aura
A ghat on the Yamuna, saffron-washed buildings above and boats moored below

विश्राम घाट

Vishram Ghat

The ghat where Krishna is said to have rested after killing Kansa, and where Mathura's evening aarti is performed on the Yamuna.

Vishram means rest, and this is the ghat where Krishna is believed to have rested after killing Kansa. It is the central of Mathura's twenty-five ghats and the one where the Yamuna aarti is performed each evening — lamps, bells, and the river going dark behind them.

This is also where most of our Yamuna sevas are done: the chunri manorath, the pujan and dugdhabhishek, and tarpan and pind daan for families who have come for that. Boats run from the steps.

What we would tell you beforehand

  • Come twenty minutes before the aarti to get a seat on the steps rather than standing at the back.
  • Pandas on the ghat will offer to perform a puja on the spot and name a price afterwards. If you want a seva done, let us arrange it beforehand with a purohit we know and you will be told the cost first.
  • The steps are wet and slick near the water. Hold on to elders.
