Vrinda Aura
The carved sandstone shikhara at Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura, seen through a colonnade

श्री कृष्ण जन्मभूमि

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi

The prison cell where Krishna is believed to have been born, now at the centre of a large temple complex in Mathura.

The garbha griha here is a small, low chamber said to be the cell in which Devaki and Vasudeva were held by Kansa, and in which Krishna was born. The complex around it includes the Keshav Dev temple and the Bhagavata Bhavan. It is the reason Mathura is Mathura.

Security is tight and the queue is managed. Expect to leave everything behind, expect to be searched, and expect to move through the inner chamber rather than linger in it. For most families this is a short, serious visit rather than a leisurely one.

What we would tell you beforehand

  • No phones, no cameras, no bags, no leather. This is enforced strictly. Leave everything in the car — we will park where you can get back to it easily.
  • Janmashtami here is extraordinary and completely impassable. If you are coming for it, we need to plan the whole day around it, not just the visit.
  • Dress conservatively. Shoulders and knees covered for everyone.
