ब्रज की होली

Holi in Braj, 2027

Braj does not have a day of Holi. It has about forty, and the famous ones — Barsana, Nandgaon, the flower Holi at Banke Bihari — fall in the week of 17 to 22 March 2027. Rooms in Vrindavan are gone by January.

What actually happens, day by day

Clouds of yellow and green colour over a dense crowd at Lathmar Holi, lathis raised above the heads

Wednesday, 17 March · Barsana

Lathmar Holi at Barsana

The men of Nandgaon come to Barsana to raise a flag over Radha Rani's temple, and the women of Barsana drive them off with lathis. The men carry leather shields and take the blows. It is not staged for visitors — it is a village tradition that happens to have an audience.

Crowds: Extraordinary, and the most crowded day of the year. Come early or not at all.

Thursday, 18 March · Nandgaon

Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon

The return match. Barsana's men go to Nandgaon and the women of Nandgaon do the same to them. Smaller than Barsana, and for that reason a number of our guests prefer it.

Crowds: Very crowded, but more manageable than Barsana.

Friday, 19 March · Mathura

Holi at the Janmasthan

Mathura's own Lathmar at the Krishna Janmasthan, and the huge procession from Vishram Ghat through the old city.

Crowds: Dense in the old lanes. We park outside and walk in.

Saturday, 20 March · Vrindavan

Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari

For about twenty minutes the priests shower the crowd with flower petals instead of colour. It is brief, it is beautiful, and people wait hours for it.

Crowds: The temple fills long before the doors open. This one needs planning.

Sunday, 21 March · Across Braj

Holika Dahan

The bonfires are lit after dark in every neighbourhood, and the night is loud and warm.

Crowds: Local and spread out. Easy to join wherever you are staying.

Monday, 22 March · Everywhere

Rangwali Holi

The Holi everyone knows — colour, water, and the whole of Braj out on the street from early morning.

Crowds: Everyone, everywhere. Wear clothes you will throw away.

Before you decide

Book by December

Rooms in Vrindavan and Barsana are committed by January, and prices roughly double for that week. This is not a sales line — it is simply what the town does.

It is rough in a crowd

Barsana on Lathmar day is shoulder to shoulder for hours in the sun. Wonderful, and genuinely hard. We would not take a frail elder or a small child into it, and we will say so.

Colour does not come out

Wear clothes you are ready to lose, and take an old pair of glasses if you wear them. Oil your hair and skin the night before.

There is a gentler version

If the famous days sound like too much, the quieter Braj Holi in the villages around Nandgaon is lovely and almost empty. Ask us.
