निधिवन

Nidhivan

A grove of short, twisted tulsi trees where Radha and Krishna are believed to perform the raas each night — and which everyone leaves before dark.

Nidhivan is a walled grove in the middle of Vrindavan, planted with low tulsi trees whose trunks twist and lean into one another. The belief held here is that every night Radha and Krishna come to the grove for the raas leela, and that nobody — no person, no monkey, no bird — may remain to see it. The grove is closed and emptied before dark.

Inside stands the samadhi of Swami Haridas and the Rang Mahal, where a bed is made up each evening, with paan, water and bangles left out, and found disturbed in the morning. You are free to make of that what you like. What is not in doubt is that it is the quietest and strangest place in Vrindavan, and that it feels entirely different from the temples around it.

What we would tell you beforehand

  • Go early in the morning. It is the one place in Vrindavan that is genuinely peaceful before about 8 am.
  • Photography of the Rang Mahal is restricted. Follow what the sevadars tell you rather than the other visitors.
  • The monkeys here are quick and they take spectacles. Keep glasses in a bag, not on your head.
