श्री बांके बिहारी मंदिर

Banke Bihari Temple

The temple at the centre of Vrindavan, where the curtain is drawn every few minutes so no one holds the gaze of Banke Bihari Ji too long.

Banke Bihari Ji was found at Nidhivan by Swami Haridas, and the deity has been worshipped here since the temple was built in 1864. There is no bell and no conch — the worship is quiet by design. What everyone notices first is the curtain: it is pulled across the deity every few minutes and then opened again, because the belief is that Bihari Ji's glance is too much to hold for long. You will be moved along. That is not rudeness, it is how a temple that takes this many people a day works.

It is small, it is close, and in Kartik or at Holi it is overwhelming. Go early. If someone in your group is unsteady on their feet, tell us and we will plan the visit for a time when the lane outside is passable.

What we would tell you beforehand

  • Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, and the rule is enforced. There are paid lockers in the lanes outside, and we will hold your things if you would rather.
  • 6 pm on a Saturday in Kartik is the worst time in the entire year. Early morning on a weekday is the best.
  • The approach is a narrow lane with shops both sides. Cars cannot reach the door — expect a short walk, or an e-rickshaw for the last stretch.
  • There is no official VIP pass. Anyone selling you one outside is selling you nothing.
