द्वारकाधीश मंदिर
Dwarkadhish Temple
Mathura's main working temple, a short walk from Vishram Ghat, with painted ceilings and a working rhythm of aarti through the day.
Built in 1814 and run by the Vallabhacharya sampradaya, Dwarkadhish is where Mathura actually worships. The courtyard is painted and colonnaded, the ceilings are worth looking up at, and there are several aartis through the day on a schedule that the sevadars keep to closely. It sits in the old city near Vishram Ghat, so most families pair the two.
At Holi this temple plays — properly, with colour thrown inside the courtyard — and it is one of the better places to experience that without being in a street crowd.
What we would tell you beforehand
- It shuts at midday. More families get this wrong than any other temple in Mathura.
- Phones are generally not allowed inside. Assume not and leave yours in the car.
- The lanes around it are narrow and busy. We will drop you at the closest point a car can reach and walk in with you.
